Museum of Historical Jewels of Ukraine

The Museum of Historical Jewels of Ukraine — a branch of the National Museum of History of Ukraine — was opened to visitors in January 1969. Most of the collection of the Museum consists of archaeological research materials. For more than 200 years, archaeologists have been studying mounds — earthen structures above burials. They find jewelry of weapons, bridle, costumes, ritual items that reflect the culture of the Cimmerians, Scythians, Sarmatians. These tribes ruled the territory of modern Ukraine for more than a thousand years — from the 9th century BC to the IV century AD — and played a significant role in world history. The centers of jewelry production at that time were mainly Greek colonial cities founded in the Northern Black Sea in the VII-V centuries BC. Ancient craftsmen also made jewelry on the orders of the local nobility, taking into account their tastes. A large section of the exposition tells about the era of the Middle Ages. This is the story of many tribes and peoples who replaced each other in the steppe zone of Ukraine from the IV to the XIV century. In the windows of the museum you can see the precious decorations inherent in the Turkic-speaking peoples — the Huns, Avars, Pechenegs, Polovets, as well as the Mongol-Tatars. Of particular interest are the products of East Slavic jewelers of the VI-VIII centuries and masters of Kievan Rus of the XIX-XIII centuries. A significant part of the collection of the Museum consists of decorative arts of the XVI-XX centuries: works of Ukrainian, Russian, Central Asian, Transcaucasian and Western European jewelers. There is also a unique collection of Jewish cult silver from the early 18th — 20th centuries. XX century. In addition, the museum also contains works of modern Ukrainian master jewelers.
