Sholom Aleichem Museum

Within the framework of the requirements and needs of modern civilized society, the museum is not only the location of permanent thematic exhibitions and the venue for exhibitions of works of art, but, equally important, especially now, the museum serves as a research and cultural and educational center. And the Museum of Sholom-Aleichem, a branch of the Museum of the History of the City of Kyiv, successfully copes with these tasks.

The team of researchers of the Sholom-Aleichem Museum offers students and teachers a number of cultural and educational events: lectures on world and Ukrainian history, culture and art - directly in our Museum or online.

The museum also offers master classes on fine art in the program “Draw Together”, conducted by the famous Kiev artist and art critic, director of the Sholom-Aleichem Museum Irina Klimov.

Among the outstanding writers of the past, whose work has stood the test of time and entered the treasury of world culture, an honorable place is occupied by the classic of Jewish literature Sholom Aleichem.

“Sholom-Aleichem” - peace to you! With such a greeting came to the Jewish masses more than a hundred years ago, Sholom Rabinovich, who soon became the most popular, beloved writer, Sholom Aleichem.

One of the main themes of the exposition of the Kiev Museum of Sholom-Aleichem, a branch of the Museum of the History of Kyiv, is Sholom-Aleichem and Kyiv, Sholom-Aleichem and Ukraine.

Kiev played a huge role in the life of the writer: here he was formed, courageous both as a person and as a writer.

“Kyiv is my city... The fact that I can't be in Kyiv makes me cringe.” Sholom-Aleichem's reply to the congratulatory telegram from Kyiv, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of his literary activity. Italy, 1908.

Sholom-Aleichem himself said that he was the chronicler of the life of the Jewish people. The life of the inhabitants of the Jewish town became a source that nourished the talent and inspiration of the writer.

His stories, stories, novels are not just documents of an era that has already disappeared, but highly artistic literary works.

The exposition of the Kiev Museum of Sholom-Aleichem is a story about the life and work of an outstanding writer, as well as the opportunity to join the spiritual and material culture of the Jewish people. During the tour, some ceremonial Jewish objects, objects of traditional Jewish life are displayed.

On the monitors installed in the hall, you can see fragments of films and performances based on the works of Sholom Aleichem, Jewish architecture and the unique art of Jewish masters of stone processing — Jewish tombstones (matsevas), ancient Jewish books, ancient manuscripts, Jewish copies calligraphy, learn more about the “Baileys Case” (a trial that attracted the attention of not only the Russian, but also the European public of the beginning of the 20th century), etc.

In an apartment on Velyka Vasilkovskaya, 5 (this is where the Museum is located) Sholom-Aleichem lived from 1896 to mid-1903 (he left this house between April and August 1903). It was the best time of his writing life. Here he wrote “Menachem Mendla”, “In the Little World of Little People”, “Novo Kasrilovka” (“All Berdichev”), some short stories from “Tevie-milochar”.

In addition to the main exhibition hall, the Museum has a hall for variable expositions, which almost every month opens new exhibitions of works by artists whose works reflect Jewish themes.

The Museum has a lecture program “Pages of Jewish History and Culture”, concerts, seminars, conferences, meetings with prominent figures of culture, science, art, etc.”
