The National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine is an architectural and landscape complex of all historical and ethnographic regions of Ukraine: Polissya, Slobozhanshchyny and Poltava regions, Carpathians, Naddnipryanshchyna, Podillya and the South. The open-air museum, founded on February 6, 1969, is located on the southern outskirts of Kiev — the historical land that once belonged to the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. It received its first visitors in 1976. Today, about 300 monuments of folk construction of the XVI-XX centuries are installed on the territory of Scansen. Traditional residential and economic complexes include cottages, storerooms, wells and other attributes of the ancient Ukrainian village. The oldest architectural exhibit is a hut from the village. Samara of the Volyn region (1587). The museum funds number about 100 thousand different exhibits: folk clothes, cloth, furniture, tools, products of potters, bondars, carpenters, carpenters, blacksmiths, folk painting and painting, musical instruments, children's toy, etc. Scansen constantly cares about revival and development of folk crafts, contributes to the restoration of ancient traditions. Since 1978, seasonal ethnographic fairs have been held here, where folk masters from all over Ukraine come to share experiences, meet new friends, teach visitors ancient crafts. The museum is actively engaged in the development of the spiritual culture of Ukrainians. It became traditional to hold folk holidays: from Christmas and Kolodius, to Andrew and the meeting with St. Nicholas. Each event does not take place without interesting rites and customs. In the village administration there is a “Creative Workshop”, where anyone can learn how to make crafts of folk art: from a stick to a spoon. Each visitor can walk along the paths of the museum on their own, or accompanied by a qualified guide. There are also souvenir shops and food establishments on the territory. Every year the Kiev scansen welcomes visitors not only from Ukraine, but also from different parts of the world. Become one of them!
