The National Museum “Chernobyl” is a multifunctional historical and cultural institution that combines scientific, cultural and educational activities with the activities of a modern museum on archiving, preserving and publicizing the history of the nuclear accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant as the most serious radioecological disaster of the twentieth century, the consequences of which have no consequences analogous and different from other known natural and man-made disasters in the world. They are still problems of the present and, unfortunately, will remind us of ourselves and our descendants.The museum was opened to the public on April 26, 1992 in the capital of Ukraine, Kiev, one hundred kilometers from the epicenter of the disaster.The mission of the museum is to help humanity realize the scale of the disaster through the fate of thousands of people — its participants, witnesses and victims, to make people recognize the need for reconciliation between man, science and technology, which have put at particular risk the existence of human civilization and planet Earth itself, to comprehend the lessons of tragedy in all spheres of life and prevent the world from forgetting these lessons, to become a warning to the generation of the new millennium. Our goal is to make the museum an educational center of environmental culture and culture of life safety. For this purpose, we unite specialists, scientists, teachers, the public of Ukraine and the world under the roof of the museum, develop a variety of educational and socio-cultural programs for all levels of visitors.The wealth of the museum collection, the high scientific and artistic and aesthetic level of permanent exhibition and temporary exhibitions, is appropriate professional training of employees, provide an opportunity to satisfy the age-related, professional, spiritual interests of visitors.The slogan of the museum “Est dolendi modus, non est timendi dolendi” greets visitors at the entrance to the exposition. Translated from Latin it means “There is a limit in sadness, but anxiety has no limit” The author of the art and design concept of the museum is the People's Artist of Ukraine Anatoly Haidamaka. His artistic and emotional, philosophical installations carry a significant thematic load, help to understand more deeply the universal tragedy of the twentieth century.
