The grand opening of the museum took place on August 21, 2004. Almost from that day, museum expositions began to be widely used in the educational process.
The museum exhibits reflect the activities of law enforcement agencies of Ukraine from the times of Kievan Rus to the present. Documentary materials reveal the nature and features of the work of the Ukrainian law enforcement system, its role in state-building processes, protection of public order, fight against crime.
The museum's funds have collected more than 20 thousand exhibits that highlight the process of formation and organization of the central departmental bodies of the law enforcement system of Ukraine at different stages of its existence: the General Secretariat of Internal Affairs (Ministry of Internal Affairs) of the Ukrainian People's Republic during the Central Council, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Ukrainian State Hetman Pavlo Skoropadov of the UNR of the Directorate, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR (URSR) and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. The total area of twelve exhibition halls is 650 square meters.
The exposition presents photographs, documents and personal belongings of famous law enforcement officers; the most important legal acts relating to the creation, organization and activities of law enforcement agencies; decorations of the Ministry of Internal Affairs; samples of weapons and uniforms of various historical periods, etc.
Collections of cold and firearms seized from criminals, counterfeit money and documents, as well as the tools with which they were made, materials of resonant criminal cases, material evidence, etc. are exhibited. There is a separate hall dedicated to the participation of units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine in the anti-terrorist operation taking place in the East of Ukraine.
Thematic expositions of the museum are used in the educational process in the training of police officers — trainees and cadets of the NAVS, other educational institutions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, students of legal universities. The museum is eagerly visited by students of lyceums and schools of the city. Kyiv, law enforcement veterans, representatives of public organizations, international delegations, etc.
