The museum opened its exposition to visitors on July 2, 1986. The exposition is built on a thematic and chronological principle and recreates the history of writing on Ukrainian lands, covering all periods of development of Ukrainian literature, starting from the 11th century (Kievan Rus) to the present. The total number of exhibited exhibits is more than 5 thousand units, in total the museum collection includes several has more than 97 thousand exhibits, including unique old prints, manuscript books, first editions and life editions of works of famous writers of Ukraine, their manuscripts, memorials, documents, musical instruments, works of visual art and decorative arts, photography.The pride of the museum's collection are samples of old editions of the XVII-XVIII centuries, unique old prints, in particular the first printed book in Slavic letters “Apostle” by Ivan Fedorov, the handwritten book “Listvitsa” by John Listvichnik.In the section of the XIX century:life editions of the works of Ivan Kotlyarevsky, Taras Shevchenko, Panteleimon Kulish, Nikolai Kostomarov, Ivan Franko, Mikhail Dragomanov, manuscripts of Lesia Ukrainka, Mykhailo Starytsky, Olga Kobylianskiyimemov The things of Mark Vovchko, Panas Mirnyo, Ivan Nechuya-Levitsky, Olga Kobylianska, rare photos of Mark Vovchak, Maria Zankovetska, Dniprovaya Chaika, books with autographs and other valuable exhibits.The museum has a corner of an ancient Russian chronicler, reconstruction of a printing press of the 17th century diorama of a Ukrainian village.In the section of the XX century are presented:pictures modernist writers of the beginning of the century, artists of 1920-1930s, known as artists of the “shot revival” unique artistic phenomenon “sixties” creativity of dissident writers, self-publishing works of Ukrainian writers abroad (first wave of emigration, “Prague School”, MUR, “New -York group”) In the exposition there are memorial items of Mikhail Semenko, Pavel Tychyna, Grigory Kosinka, Ostap Vishny, Yuriy Lavrinenko, Ulas Samchuk, a handwritten notebook of poems by Vasily Simonenko, manuscripts of Dokia Humenna, personal belongings and manuscripts of Vasily Stus, Yevgeny Sverstyuk, books that were with artists in prison.In the exhibition halls of the museum are exhibited literary and artistic works that represent both domestic culture and the best world properties.The museum hosts a variety of thematic and personal exhibitions.
