Kyiv city
Pankivska street, 9
Mikhail Hrushevsky climbed the stairs of his house hundreds of times on Pankovskaya, 9. In the fifteenth year of its activity (1992—2006) scientists of the Mykhailo Hrushevsky Historical and Memorial Museum climbed to their museum Olympus — the opening of the exposition. And now visitors to the Museum of the Great Ukrainian climb these authentic stairs every day. “I express my great respect to the people who returned Mikhail Sergeevich to his home, to Kyiv! Grateful and touched! Sincerely!” — the first visitor of the Museum, Viktor Yushchenko, left these words in the Book of Honored Guests. Hrushevsky “returned” to his own home, and the house on Pankovskaya, 9 returned to the revival of the status of a true national-cultural center, acquired by him at the beginning of the twentieth century.
We started when the collection of the museum counted one unique exhibit — the House of Hrushevsky. It remains so unique now, but it was filled with an equally valuable collection of museum items, which already numbers about 7 thousand units: memorial furniture, household items, books from the home library, family pictures, works of art from the family house of the Grushevskys. We do not always realize how we managed to collect it (no!, do not collect — return it to its place!). This made it possible to recreate the interiors of the apartment of an outstanding scientist exclusively with memorial objects — no typology! Only by looking at our work in isolation, the eyes of enthusiastic and surprised visitors realized — we succeeded! We succeeded because we were supported by numerous Friends of the museum, we were supported by the words of the famous TV journalist in memory of Boris Gryvachevsky: “And Pankovskaya will be a holiday!”
Young colleagues who have joined our band have the opportunity to take advantage of the numerous scientific achievements about the life and creative legacy of Mikhail Hrushevsky, which came out during the 20 years of Ukraine's independence from the pen of academic historians, literary critics, political scientists. We were laying a “path” to understanding this extraordinary figure with our “legs” and started when a single collection of Hrushevsky was published in Ukraine in the publishing house “Veselka” — “Velyky Ukrainec”. And today, our thorough scientific developments are highly appreciated by the same academic historians with whom we have walked side by side all these years. Today, it is unthinkable to imagine the “family” of Pear scholars without the scientists of our museum.
The museum has gained a well-deserved authority among its demanding colleagues: the mini-exhibition “Mikhail and Ekaterina Hrushevsky: Dialogue” was awarded the first prize of the I All-Ukrainian Museum Festival in Dnipropetrovsk (2005); exhibition project “Clock from the office of Mikhail Grul Shevskyi: Mysteries and Discoveries” received the third prize at the 3rd All-Ukrainian Museum Festival (2011).
Both the collected unique collection, the original exposition, and the scientific studios of museum workers are organically woven into our awareness of the main mission. We have revived Pankivska, 9, revived the real Ukrainian hearth that was the manor, the family House of Hrushevsky at the beginning of the twentieth century — and it is our sacred duty to preserve and maintain this revived fire. We have no right to let him fade away once again, as it happened to him. We dream and believe that, as with Hrushevsky, 9 Ukrainian streams will flow to Pankivska, creating a great Ukrainian settlement.
