Archaeological Museum of Lviv University is one of the oldest specialized institutions in the universities of Ukraine.
The beginnings of archaeological science at Lviv University date back to the turn of the 19th/20th century, when the Archaeological Office (1880) and the Department of Prehistory and Classical Archaeology (1905) were established within its walls. Further development of archaeology at the University is connected with the departments of Classical Archaeology (1916—1939), Prehistory (1921—1939), History of Material Culture and Archaeology (1939—1941), History of the Ancient World and Archaeology (1944—1949), Archaeology, Antiquity and the Middle Ages (1994—2004), archaeology and history of the ancient world (2004—2010), archaeology and specialized branches of historical science (since 2010).
During this time, archaeological expeditions of Lviv University accumulated significant collections of antiquities, which became the basis of the collections of the Archaeological Cabinet
(1880—1914), the Institutes of Prehistory and Classical Archaeology (interwar period) and the Archaeological Museum (1939—1941 and since 1967).
The development of the museum and the replenishment of its funds are associated with the names of such famous researchers as Ludwik Tsviklinsky, Karol Gadacek, Edmund Bulyanda, Leon Kozlovsky, Tadeusz Sulimirsky, Ivan Starchuk, Markian Smishko, Yaroslav Pasternak, Vladimir Zvarich, Igoz Sveshnikov, Larysa Krushelnytska, Vladimir Baran,
Vitold Aulich, Alexander Chernysh, Nikolai Peleshchyshyn, Roman Chaika.
Today, the collection of the museum has more than 50 thousand storage units, of which 1.4 thousand are presented in the exposition, which highlights the material and spiritual culture of the population of Volyn and Precarpathia from the Paleolithic to the princely era. Materials from such textbooks as Molodove (Paleolithic), Tadani (Aenolite), Zimno (Aenolite, Early Slavs), Golyshiv (Aenolite), Listvin (Eneolithic, Knyazha Doba), Koshylivtsi, Bolche Zolote (Eneolithic), Zozov, Ivyning are exhibited, Ostrovec (Bronze Age), Czechs, Derevlyany, Zolochiv, Lagodiv, Cherepyn (Early Iron Age), Chizhykiv (early Roman times), Ripniv, Bovshiv (late Roman times, early Slavs), Plisnesko (princely days).
Archaeological Museum:
• created for the purpose of studying, preserving and using monuments of material and spiritual culture of the ancient population of Ukraine;
• conducts surveys, studies and attribution of archaeological monuments, gives recommendations on their preservation;
• promotes and popularizes the achievements of archaeological science, provides the opportunity for faculty teachers to use the museum's exposition and stock material in research work and educational process. Practical classes on certain topics of the course “Archaeology”, normative and special courses of archaeological disciplines with full-time and part-time students take place in the museum. Classes are conducted by museum staff and faculty departments.
• provides professional assistance to students of other faculties of the University, students of other universities, as well as students of colleges, lyceums, secondary schools;
carries out educational and educational work with students of schools and other educational institutions by conducting sightseeing and thematic excursions, excursions, providing consultations on history, archeology and local studies;
• carries out annual archaeological expeditions with students of the faculty, participates in scientific conferences and seminars, promotes its work in the press, on radio and television;
• cooperates with scientific institutions and persons engaged in the study of archaeological monuments, including in the framework of international cooperation in the scientific sphere.
The main directions of the museum are:
• participation in the organization of the educational process;
• research activities;
• completion of museum collections;
• exhibition, stock and monument protection works.”
