The communal institution of culture “Khmelnytsky Regional Art Museum” (abbreviated — HOHM) is a unique museum institution, which was the first among the post-Soviet museums during independent Ukraine to choose an innovative collection concept: collecting, storing, researching, exhibiting and popularizing Ukrainian contemporary art of the twentieth century -XXI centuries.
HOHM is not just a museum in the academic sense. HOHM is a common cultural space in which not only museum specialists take an active part, but also all interested creators and consumers of modern cultural products. Having the status of a regional art museum, the HOHM has always identified itself in a broader perspective: national and world art processes have a greater influence on its activities, policies and strategy than local artistic life. After all, in today's globalized world, communication provides great opportunities to be not only aware of, but also involved in the diversity of world cultures and worldviews.
We pride ourselves on our inclusiveness and openness, as we strive to become a cultural hub where diverse cultural, artistic, social, religious, ethnic, gender and political views are welcomed, and each personal history and experience is respected. Naturally, the role of art as a powerful source of creating new values and common meanings is growing in the modern world — our museum takes a worthy part in this civilizationally important process.
HOHM is located on the central street of the city of Khmelnitsky in a building erected in 1903 for the Proskurov branch of the South Russian Industrial Bank in the so-called “brick style”, characteristic of Proskurov of the late 19th — early 20th century.
During the years of their activity, museum specialists have managed to form an art collection, which is objectively an integral part of the history of Ukrainian art of the XX-XXI centuries, thanks to the organization of exhibitions, festivals, events, symposiums, art residencies and planned purchases. one of the most integral and representative in Ukraine (more than 7000 works created by about 1000 artists and artists).
The challenges posed by the modern era of rapid change have forced a critical revision of the museum's image as a sociocultural institution whose main mission is solely to store material monuments of cultural heritage. Having overcome certain stages of institutional stagnation and economic depression, HOHM has established itself both as a museum center and as a modern cultural platform, which, with the change in 2017 of top management and part of the employees, is dynamically modernizing.
The mission of our art museum is the collection of art objects and the collection of information related to art, the storage and safety of works in the repositories and on the exhibition areas, their research, exposition, popularization and dissemination of information, comprehensive and reliable transfer of exhibits, archives and research for future generations. The scientific activity of the museum is carried out in the areas of stock, exhibition and educational work. Administrative and economic activities are aimed at supporting and developing the infrastructure capacity of the HOHM.
As the first museum of contemporary Ukrainian art in the history of independent Ukraine, whose core collection consists of works by outstanding artists and artists of the XX-XXI centuries, HOHM has a responsibility to the professional community and the community in compliance with the chosen strategy.
Museums of contemporary art have become a place where the dialogue between the viewer and the work of art takes place, the viewer with the artist, the viewer with the viewer — modern art comes to life and acquires new meanings together with the viewer. Here they gain new knowledge and experience, make sense of the local and global, help the general audience to get to know and understand artists and artists better. Contemporary art is a space of free artistic expression and the dominance of philosophical concepts.
We see HOHM as a space of synergy, where creative ideas are generated, supported and implemented, a topical cultural product is produced, services of new forms and methods are provided, experiences are exchanged, informal education is received and partnerships are established that contribute to the realization of the following innovative art projects — as in museums, as well as initiated by the HOHM outside its borders. To build three-level connections — emotional, functional, worldview — with each contact audience, each referent personality for the sustainable identification of HOHM as a platform for the joint creation of modern culture in the process of interaction. Maintain a balance between the heaviness of tradition and futurism, defining and reacting to the course of events.
