A municipal institution whose mission is to explore, comprehend and present the tragic pages of the history of the mid-twentieth century. in the context of the challenges of the present. The creation of the museum was initiated by Lviv City Council in 2009. The construction of the museum complex lasted from 2014 to 2016.
The museum is located in Lviv on the territory of the former ghetto (1941—1943) and the prison number 25 (1944—1955). The location defines the focal themes of the institution: the transformation of urban space as a result of Nazi and Soviet violence, human experiences in extreme conditions. We create a platform for dialogue and discussion around traumatic events of the past and present for the sake of building a tolerant and inclusive society. The museum is an example of commemorating the controversial legacy left after World War II and the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Among the main activities of the institution: exhibition and educational projects, artistic interventions in the urban space, cooperation with specialized institutions of Ukraine and other countries, documentation of oral-historical evidence of tragic events from the 1930s to the present.
