Zaporozhye
Khortitsa Island
The Museum of the History of the Zaporizhzhya Cossacks began to be created in the 60s of the twentieth century, during the so-called “thaw”. At this time, the movement for the revival of national traditions is spreading among the broad masses of the Ukrainian community. The manifestation of this was the growth of interest in the history of the Cossacks and the idea of perpetuating its memory. In order to somehow manage this process, the Communist Party organs were forced to support public speeches. In 1965, the local municipal committees of the KPU and the regional executive committee, after a number of appeals from the public and scientists, decided to appeal to the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Central Committee of the KPU Petro Shelest with a proposal to “create on the island. Khortytsya State Reserve of the History of Zaporizhzhya Cossacks...”, “considering the great progressive role played by the Zaporizhzhya Cossacks in the struggle against foreign enslavers, in the development of the Liberation War of 1648-1654.” It was proposed to create the reserve in the form of a garden-decorative park, in the center of which to build a panoramic museum, and decorate the alleys with sculptures of outstanding progressive figures - Khmelnytsky, Sirko, Sulima, etc.
