The museum was opened on October 14, 1997. The co-founders of the institution were the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Council and the Regional Society “Memorial”. The exposition of the museum is located in 4 halls of the two-story building of the retired adviser of the regional court of Ukrainian Vladislav Lutsky (1841-1911). The exposition highlights the history of the liberation struggle of the inhabitants of the Precarpathian region and state-building processes in the territory of Galicia, from the 12th century to the events that took place in the 20th century. The basis of the museum fund were original postcards, brochures, magazines of OUN and UPA, as well as objects and documents found under excavation time in Demyanovo Laga. In the museum's funds there are also many valuable documents covering the activities of the Legion of Sharpshooters, UNR, ZUNR.
