“Andrei Sheptytsky National Museum in Lviv (NML) is one of the most important treasures of national culture and art in Ukraine and the world. The more than 175,000 NML collection reflects the evolution of artistic culture of Ukraine over nine centuries. The subject of special pride is the world's richest collection of Ukrainian sacred art of the XII—XVII centuries and the most valuable collection of iconographic works of the XIV-XVIII centuries (more than 4,000 units).

The museum appeared in 1905 as a private foundation of Metropolitan of Galicia Andrew (Count) Sheptytsky under the name “Church Museum”. In the course of the rapid development of the foundation and the growth of collections under the leadership of the first director, a famous scholar in the fields of Slavistics, art history, book studies I. Svientsitsky (1905 — 1952), the official name of the institution was changed to “National Museum in Lviv” (1911). December 13, 1913 There was a solemn opening of the first exposition, during which the founder announced the transfer of the museum as a gift to the Ukrainian people with a solemn act.

In December 2005, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary since its creation, the museum was given the status of “national” and assigned the name of the Founder.

Since its foundation, the National Museum has established itself as a leading national spiritual and artistic institution that serves as the epicenter of artistic life in Western Ukraine and gathers in its walls famous figures of Ukrainian culture and art, church, science and politics.

NML publishes its own periodical — “Annals of the National Museum in Lviv”, founded on the initiative of the Union of Supporters of the National Museum (1934-1939), which after a break of more than half a century was restored in 2000.

In the spacious exhibition halls of the main building of the NML (pr. Svobody, 20) contains sections of the permanent exhibition “Ukrainian Art of the XII—early XX century”, presenting the gems of the national and world art treasury. In the Historical Complex of NML named after. Andreia Sheptytskoho (str. M. Drahomanova, 42) there is an updated exposition “Ukrainian Art of the XX century”. In addition, the Art and Memorial Museums (departments of NML) of Ivan Trush, Oleksy Novakivskyi, Elena Kulchytska, Leopold Levitsky, which are located in the former residences and creative workshops of these outstanding Ukrainian artists welcome their visitors. In the picturesque Sokalsky region there is the Art Museum “Sokalshchyna” (department of NML in the city. Chervonohrady of Lviv region).

Every year, the NML and its expositions are visited by more than 150,000 spectators. As a significant factor of the spiritual and cultural space of Western Ukraine year after year, the museum is traditionally the host of about a hundred regional, republican and international exhibitions and other cultural and artistic events; it consistently affirms its role as one of the leading centers of scientific and scientific and educational activity in Ukraine.”
