The Smelyansk Museum of Local Lore is the center of cultural heritage and the visiting card of Smila. It houses the largest collection of objects and materials from historical development, culture, economy, prominent figures of the city and Smilyan region.
A piggy bank of historical treasures, this is what can be said about the city museum of local lore, located in the city center in a building that is a monument of architecture of the early twentieth century and belongs to the style of late modernism.
On September 10, 1910, a branch of the St. Petersburg Accounting and Loan Bank was opened in this building. By the decision of the Executive Committee of the Cherkasy Oblast dated April 19, 1990, the building is an architectural monument of regional importance, protected by the state.
The institution was opened on December 25, 1967. Initially, the museum worked on a public basis, but already in 1970 it received the title of people's historical and local lore. And since 1991, the institution has become state-owned, which qualitatively changes its position, the situation with financing and filling improves. The museum not only serves as a permanent exhibition, but also conducts research and research work among residents of the city and surrounding areas. Employees of the museum estimated that during the period of its existence, about 200 thousand daredevils and guests of the city visited the institution.
Collection of the Smilyan Museum
In the museum's funds there are more than 3500 different historical exhibits, most of which are on display. The museum consists of 3 halls, where the cartographic heritage of the Smilian region from the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century is presented, the inheritance of the family of the Counts of Bobrinsky, who owned Smila for a long time, and famous citizens, as well as the antiquity of the Nadnepryansky region. The most valuable exhibits are: a casket made of glass and metal, made by Italian master jewelers in the 18th century, a castle of the mid-19th century, building materials from the estates of the Counts of Bobrinski, etc.
