The history of the Zaporizhzhya Regional Art Museum began in 1971 with the complete absence of a basic collection. Then it was impossible to predict what the museum would be like, now the unique collection of works has more than 16,000 exhibits.The People's Artist of Ukraine Dmytro Hnatyuk played a decisive role in the formation of the collection of national painting of the XIX-early XX centuries. Almost 60 works from his collection came to the museum — K. Trutovskogo, S. Vasylkivskoho, S. Svitoslavskogo, K. Kryzhitsky and others.
