The Cherkasy Regional Art Museum was opened to visitors in the first years of Independence in 1991. The museum began its activities in the premises of the former municipal committee of the Communist Party and initially functioned as a branch of the Regional Museum of Local Lore, but since 1994 it has been operating as an independent museum institution. Its funds store more than 6 thousand units. The basis of the museum exposition, which occupies 1,406 square meters, consists of collections from the private collections of the Counts of Bobrinsky, Kantakuziniv-Speransky, Lopukhin and Bilokopitov. In general, the formation of the museum collection took place through the acquisition of works from the exhibition halls of the former Soviet Union, from the Directorate of Art Exhibitions of Ukraine and the acquisition of works from leading Ukrainian artists, folk masters, collectors. Today, a significant contribution to the replenishment of museum funds is made by artists who donate their works after the completion of personal, collective exhibitions and plenary sessions.
