Museum-Reserve of Markian Shashkevich

November 23, 1986, on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the birth of the religious and cultural and public figure, founder of the new Ukrainian literature, the “awakening” of the national consciousness Markiyan Shashkevych (1811-1843) in the village. Markiyan Shashkevich Museum-Reserve was opened in Podlissya Zolochiv district of Lviv region.

The opening of the museum was preceded by the installation of a granite stone on its territory in 1961 with the inscription “Here was the hut in which Markian Shashkevich was born on November 6, 1811.” The manor, resembling the house of the maternal grandfather, priest Roman Avdykovsky, was recreated based on the data of the cadastral map of the village. The opening of 1845 with a survey of the territory of the building, archaeological excavations, “Description of the hut M. Shashkevych”, submitted by V. Tarnavsky in the newspaper “Shashkevichevsky news” (Ch. 3—4, 1931). On the territory of the estate there is a well and an oak from the time of the spiritual enlightener. Near the museum is a bust of M. Shashkevich works by Dmitry Krvavich.

The exposition of the museum consists of two parts. The first, unfolded in two halls, reveals the difficult life path, priestly, social and creative activity of M. Shashkevich. The central place is given to the publication “Mermaid of the Dniester”, a folklore and literary almanac, printed in 1837 in living spoken Ukrainian, not in traditional Cyrillic, but in the so-called Grazhdan font. Nearby are the personal belongings of M. Shashkevich is a box and a tuning fork, transferred from Poland by Julian Kupczynski, a distant relative of the Shashkevichs. Of great value are the autographs of the manuscripts of M. Shashkevich, editions of his works, copies of rare books and periodicals of the late 18th - early 19th centuries. The exposition is complemented by a portrait of M. Shashkevych, painted by Lyubomyr Medvid, and a vase of works by folk masters, donated by Olesem Gonchar of the Writers' Union of Ukraine on the day of the museum's opening.

The second part of the exposition in two halls presents the Western Ukrainian life of the first half of the XIX century, the time of life and activity of M. Shashkevich.

In the Museum-Reserve of Markiyan Shashkevych, materials revealing the figure of this great Ukrainian were collected, systematized and elaborated.
